Life & work
Southern Iran and poetry
Nafisi taught himself music and spent more than twenty years in Hormozgan, where southern Iran's musical traditions influenced his work.2 He has described meeting the poet Ebrahim Monsefi as a turning point in his artistic life.3 When setting modern poetry, he says, the rhythm of the words suggests the melody he sings.3
His first album, Rira, appeared on Hermes Records in 2005–06. It included Nima Yooshij’s “Rira” and Monsefi’s “Raghsam Gerefteh Bood.”4
Hafez and The New Design
Nafisi released The New Design in December 2016.5 At its launch he said he had spent five years concentrating on Hafez's poetry; working with those poems had influenced both his melodies and his guitar playing.5
In May 2017 he performed alone with his guitar at Vahdat Hall.4 He returned to pieces from Rira that he had recorded with other instruments, now singing them with only his guitar.4

Soheil Nafisi (b. 1967, Tehran) is a renowned Iranian singer, composer, and guitarist, celebrated for his exceptional ability to blend music with poetry. A self-taught musician, Nafisi spent over two decades in Hormozgan, a culturally vibrant region in southern Iran, whose rich traditions significantly influenced his distinctive sound.
Nafisi's deep passion for Iranian poetry spans from classical works to contemporary masterpieces, encompassing the enduring verses of Hafiz and the avant-garde writings of Ahmad Shamloo and Nima Yooshij. This poetic inspiration informs his minimalist, narrative-driven style, characterized by the intimate interplay of a single instrument and a solitary voice.
