Life & work
Recording 88
While visiting Tehran, Azimi brought together friends he had played music with for years to record their songs professionally. He had written most of the material over the years, but some developed during recording: the whole band created “Tatilat” together over several nights.1
The band's beginnings coincided with Iran's 2009 election. Azimi later recalled that the atmosphere affected their spirits and darkened their music.4 He said they avoided seeking permission because of censorship.5
After 88
The original members spent only three or four months together in Tehran and had no opportunity to perform live there.1
After recording the album, Azimi had to return to London, and two members could not join him.4 Azimi and the band's guitarist began working with new musicians, who joined them for later concerts.1
The separation eventually led Azimi to work under his own name. In a 2014 interview, however, he still regarded Radio Tehran as an open project.14

“With Radio Tehran, we didn’t go for permission, we remained underground, because censorship will make the song impotent.
